My name is Justin. I sing for a Bristol Based band called I AM THE DOOR. I am a student at UWE studying graphic design and for my final self assesment am trying to get together a proposal for a publication (what form it will take I'm not sure yet) focusing on the Bristol Alternative music scene. I want to focus on bands, musicians in the Bristol area that have real talent but are not getting recognition. I have been in a band in Bristol for about a year now and feel the scene is not exposed enough. There is constantly shows going on around the area with real home grown talent. But no one is pushing people to go and support. We have played all over the country with some fantastic bands including Jetplane Landing and My Deaf Audio and have played Bristol many times. We have been featured on Radio OneMusic Unsigned. But still dont see the Bristol Alt scene evolving. I am writing to you to ask your opinion on the scene in Bristol and whether you can help me with my research. Thank you for your time Justin www.iamthedoor.comjustinpercival@hotmail.com

Hey Justin, Good to hear we're not the only ones struggling through the rock'n'roll mire right now - I guess i'd agree that the Bristol rock scene is hardly the new Camden at the moment, but there are some awesome bands out there these days (2 Day Rule, Geisha, Bosc Monitor, Retina, Blueneck, Lords Of The Southern Priest...) playing regularly, it's just that there doesn't seem to be that ready-made crowd of willing punters that a thriving scene requires to..er...thrive. We went to see Geisha and Blueneck at Fiddlers a few weeks ago and there were about a dozen people there - a sobering proposition given the awesome show that they put on. I guess I can see how bands could get demoralised by the lack of interest.... still, i'm a great believer in belligerent persistence, making your own luck, and in the power of good music...... as long as there's someone there to witness it heh heh heh
All the best to I Am The Door, drop us a line when you've got a gig on and we'll be down to say hi.
G
