Time to list your favourites.
I'll begin with the following:
Best album of 2004: 'Racecar is Racecar Backwards' - Reuben Runners up: 'Contraband' - Velvet Revolver; 'Never Apologise Never Explain' - Therapy?; 'Size Matters' - Helmet
Best gig of 2004: Therapy? @ Oxford Zodiac Runners up: Helmet @ Meanfiddler; Paul McCartney @ Glastonbury Festival; Deckard @ Bristol Anson Rooms
Note: I can't currently remember any gigs I went to in the first 6 months of the year. I am therefore presuming they weren't that good. This may change...

Mike - Is Dizzee Rascal really that good?
All I have to go on is his embarassing contribution to the band aid 20 thingy.

OK, here goes:
Albums:
Mastodon - Leviathan Therapy? - Never Apologise, Never Explain Helmet - Size Matters Throat - Numero Deux (though it never actually saw the light of day, RIP Throat) Monster Magnet - Monolithic Baby!
Gig:
Helmet @ London Mean Fiddler - First time I'd seen them and boy oh boy did they deliver. Very very exciting indeed.
Yes indeed, it has been a fine year for Rock.
Oh yeah, and a special mention for the demise of the mighty Sonic Undermind (nee The Unholy), RIP

Mike - Is Dizzee Rascal really that good? All I have to go on is his embarassing contribution to the band aid 20 thingy. Yes, he's that good (I think). Boy in da Corner was my album of 2003 and Showcase is (arguably better) and my album of 2004. He's not going to be everyone's thing, it's quite raw and harsh but really clever and interesting production and I think his lyrics are pretty amazing. He's hard and bitter in some ways, but young and naive at the same time. Very clever stuff anyway. I think he's a genius - but 'cause of the nature of the music one of those people that some will absolutely hate no matter what. Probably best to start with Boy In Da Corner if you haven't heard it before. I think his contribution to the Live Aid 20 is the only good thing about the record but I hated the original and I'm a bit of a Dizzee fanboy. For no other reason other than cruelty - here's Dizzee Rascal vs Chas'n'Dave www.thefreelancehairdresser.co.uk/freelance_hairdresser_-_knees_up_look_sharp.mp3

It came out last year in the US, this year over here. I can't recommend it highly enough. I thought it was one of the funniest films I've ever seen.
Wish I could have made it to that SMZ gig... ah well.
